Bonyo’s Kenya Mission Story

This month I am pleased to highlight, Bonyo’s Kenya Mission. Don’t Ask Why Get Involved…Ask WHY NOT?

In 1995, a group of thirteen medical students  from Ohio University College of Osteopathic Medicine  and Ohio State University, traveled to western Kenya. Headed up  by Dr. Bonyo Bonyo, they shared a common dream: to improve the health care for those in need – specifically in the poverty stricken area near Wanjaya, where Dr. Bonyo grew up. For more than 20 years, Bonyo’s Kenya Mission has provided medical treatment to thousands of patients in this underserved area where 70% of the population lacks access to health care.  In 2006, through private donations, a 6,000 sq. ft. facility was opened to serve the population  and is open 24 hours a day 7 days a week.In addition,  a clean water well was dug for the village and surrounding areas.  At least twice a year, Dr. Bonyo leads a team of medical students  and volunteers to provide medical services and resources to the people of Wanjaya Village.

Bonyo’s Kenya Mission also assists orphans and vulnerable children of the village with education fees through their child sponsorship program. The child sponsorship program  helps hundreds of orphans and vulnerable children continue  their education.  Funds raised from donations also  assist in providing the children and teachers at the Masara Primary School with the necessary uniforms, books and supplies.

Ways To Get Involved and Make A Difference: (WHY NOT!)

  1. Travel for a Cause…..Your trip can make a big difference in someone’s life. Join Bonyo’s Kenya Mission on a trip to Kenya.  Mission trips occur once or twice a year usually in the summer and winter .  Volunteers travel to western Kenya to work in the Mama Pilista Memorial Health Centre and provide medical services to those living in and near Wanjaya Village. Over the years, Bonyo’s Kenya Mission has provided medial treatment to tens of thousands of patients in this underserved area where 70% of the population lacks access to health care. As you would expect, the village has a pressing need for medical professionals. Physicians, nurses, nurse practitioners, dentists, optometrists, pharmacists, emergency personnel, medical and pharmacy students and volunteers will find great reward in providing patient care at the clinic. There is much work to be done, and non-medical and medical personnel work side by side in their efforts to help. Besides treating patients at the clinic, time is set aside to become acquainted with our hosts and visit local sights.  Highlights include a safari, hippo watching on Lake Victoria and sampling a variety of authentic Kenyan cuisine.  The cost of the trip varies based on airfare.  Plan $3,500 – $4,000 to cover all trip expenses including airfare, ground transportation, hotel and meals. For more information, send an e-mail to info@bonyoskenyamission.org
  2.  Donate to Bonyo’s Kenya Mission If travel is not an option for you, donating to Bonyo’s Kenya Mission will help. Bonyo’s Kenya Mission is a non-profit volunteer organization. Go to the website to look at ways to donate. www.bonyoskenyamission.org
  3. Backpack Collection: Bonyo’s Kenya Mission is collecting backpacks.  You can drop off a gently used backpack at Dr. Bonyo’s office at 1569 Vernon Odom Blvd/ Akron, OH 44320 or mail to the address.  If you are in Houston, you can also drop them off at Dr. Gathe’s office located at 4900 Fannin Street.  All donated backpacks will be taken to Kenya and donated to children attending a local school near the Mama Pilista Health Centre. Your gift of a backpack will bring a smile to a child’s face and encourage their pursuit of an education.
