ROME, ITALY

I have never heard anyone say anything negative about Rome, and you won’t find me saying it. I am in love with Rome. There is history on every corner.

Rome is the capital of Italy and is a sprawling, cosmopolitan city with nearly 3,000 years of globally influential art, architecture and culture on display. Yes–I did say 3,000 years.

Ancient ruins such as the Roman Forum and the Colosseum were created to demonstrate the power of the former Roman Empire. Pictures does not do it justice. I hired a private tour company for my time there, and it was money well spent. No lines, no waiting, and my guide was someone who was able to navigate through the streets and speak the language. She was even able to get me in the private entrance of the Colosseum, down into the pit where the Gladiators would assemble before fighting to the death among a large audience. You will need a good 4-5 days to see and experience all of the interesting things Rome has to offer.

Other must-see sites include Palatine Hill, one of the most ancient parts of the city and just above the Roman Forum. Palatine and the Campidoglio are just two of the Seven Hills of Rome. Also check out the Basilica of St. John Lateran and Scala Sancta (Holy Stairs), the Catacombs, the Caracalla Baths, Piazza Farnese, Trevi Fountain, Capitol, and Flavian Amphitheatre.

The State of Vatican City is independent, but located within Rome. Its most famous attraction is St. Peter’s Basilica. The Papal audience is Wednesdays at the historic church. Take time to visit the Sistine Chapel and Vatican Museum as well.
