ANCHORAGE, ALASKA
Anchorage, Alaska’s largest city, is in the south-central part of the state on the Cook Inlet. It’s known for its cultural sites, including the Alaska Native Heritage Center, which displays traditional crafts, stages dances and presents replicas of dwellings from the area’s indigenous groups.
The first weekend of July, the Girdwood Forest Fair is held. The Forest Fair features Alaskan artists, hand-crafted items, exotic foods and entertainers from all over Alaska. The Forest Fair kicks off with a Parade on that first Saturday at 10:00 am. Admission is free, but camping on the fairgrounds requires a fee and a camping permit. Dogs are not allowed, however.
Be sure to take the Alyeska Resort Tram to the top of Mount Alyeska for dinner and a view. Note that the tram closes for maintenance between October and late November, and again between late April and mid May.
